GPA is calculated by multiplying each course grade (on a 4.0 scale) by its credit hours, adding all totals together, then dividing by the total number of credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 grade points.
A 3.0 GPA (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is excellent. For Ivy League and top universities, a 3.8+ is often expected. For most college programs, a 2.0 is the minimum to remain enrolled.
Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives bonus points for harder courses — AP classes may count as 5.0 for an A. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale.
